Sizing a mini-split in Monroe County starts with what the equipment will actually face outdoors, not what the catalog suggests for a square footage. 130 severe weather events were recorded in Monroe County, Michigan between 2015 and 2024. At that rate, severe weather is a standing condition of the operating environment, and a contractor choosing where to mount the outdoor unit and how to rate the system has to account for it. A unit undersized or poorly positioned for conditions like these will run harder than it was built to and wear accordingly.

Electrical panels in Monroe County houses are where a mini-split contractor looks first, and what they find there decides more about the job than the unit itself does. Half the homes in Monroe County, Michigan were built in 1974 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). A house built that long before ductless systems existed was wired for a different set of demands, and the service it carries reflects that. If the panel cannot handle what a new mini-split draws without an upgrade, the electrical work becomes a line item before the equipment question is settled.

What a Mini-split Installation Covers in Your Home

Illustrated cutaway of a two-room house showing two wall-mounted indoor air conditioning units connected by pipes to an outdoor condenser unit on the ground outside.

The indoor air handler mounts high on a wall inside the room being conditioned, and it is the piece the homeowner sees every day. The outdoor unit sits on the ground or a wall bracket outside the house and houses the compressor and condenser. Together these two units do the work of moving conditioned air into the space.

A refrigerant line set runs through a small hole in the wall to connect the indoor and outdoor units, carrying the refrigerant between them. A condensate drain line also exits the indoor unit and routes moisture out of the house. A dedicated power supply feeds the outdoor unit, and a signal wire between the two units carries the commands from the thermostat or remote.

The drawing shows a typical layout, and a licensed contractor determines exactly how each piece is positioned and routed for your specific house.
