A mini-split installed in Genesee County has been working against weather that shows up regularly, not occasionally. 109 severe weather events were recorded in Genesee County, Michigan between 2015 and 2024. At that rate, the outdoor unit and compressor accumulate stress that a contractor factors in before reaching any other conclusion about what failed. Refrigerant lines, the compressor housing, and the condensate system all take that load differently, and a contractor working a repair here checks each one against what the weather record would predict before pricing anything else.

Half the homes in Genesee County, Michigan were built in 1969 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). A mini-split added to a house that old was fitted into a structure built for something else entirely, and the connections a contractor finds when they open the system reflect that. Refrigerant line routing, electrical work at the disconnect, and the condition of wall penetrations all carry the marks of whatever retrofit decisions came before. Whether a repair is straightforward or not depends less on the unit itself and more on what that earlier work actually was.

The Parts of a Mini-split a Contractor Checks First

Isometric illustration of a cutaway house showing two wall-mounted indoor air conditioning units connected by lines to a single outdoor condenser unit on the ground outside.

The indoor air handler mounts high on an interior wall and delivers conditioned air directly into the room. Its blower, evaporator coil, and drain line are all housed inside that unit, and any one of them can be the source of a problem. A contractor will pull the cover and read what the coil, the fan motor, and the condensate pan are telling them.

The outdoor compressor unit sits on a pad or bracket outside the house and holds the compressor and condenser coil. A refrigerant line set and a control wire run through a small wall penetration to connect the two units. The line set connections and the compressor itself are where a contractor looks when the indoor unit runs but the system is not doing its job.

The drawing shows the general layout of a mini-split system, and a licensed contractor determines which components are relevant to your specific house and situation.
