A mini-split that stops heating or cooling in Eaton County has almost certainly been undone by something other than weather. 30 severe weather events were recorded in Eaton County, Michigan between 2015 and 2024. At that rate, severe weather is an event in this county, not a condition, and a contractor working through a repair here will look first at refrigerant charge, electrical connections, and how the unit was originally mounted and sized. Those are the variables that wear a system down in a place where storms are occasional. A homeowner who assumes weather explains a failed board or a seized compressor will spend money on the wrong diagnosis.

Half the homes in Eaton County, Michigan were built in 1977 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). A house that old has gone through enough equipment cycles that whatever is running now was put in well after the walls were closed. When a refrigerant line shows a leak or a board stops responding, what matters is what the opened unit actually contains: whether the compressor has worn seals, whether the control board takes a part still in production, whether the line set was run correctly when it was last touched. The building's age sets the backdrop, but the repair scope is decided by what the opened system turns out to be.

The Parts of a Mini-split a Contractor Checks During Repair

Isometric illustration of a cutaway house with tiled roof showing two wall-mounted indoor mini-split units connected by line sets to an outdoor condenser beside the building.

The indoor air handler mounts high on an interior wall inside the room you want conditioned. It draws in room air, passes it across a coil, and pushes conditioned air back out. When this unit is the source of a problem, a contractor will look at the coil, the fan, the condensate drain, and the control board it houses.

The outdoor condenser unit sits on a pad or bracket outside the house and holds the compressor and the second coil. A refrigerant line set and a communication cable run between the two units through a small penetration in the wall. These connections, and the components on both ends of them, are what a contractor works through when tracing a fault.

The drawing beside this text shows a typical mini-split layout, and a licensed contractor will determine which components apply to your specific setup.
