Sizing a mini-split in Berrien County is a local calculation, not a catalog one. 123 severe weather events were recorded in Berrien County, Michigan between 2015 and 2024. At that rate, the equipment a contractor installs here runs against real seasonal pressure, and a unit spec'd without accounting for that load gets specified wrong from the start. A contractor working this area sets capacity based on what the climate here asks of the system, because the install that fits a quieter county falls short here.

Electrical panels in Berrien County houses tell a contractor more about the job's scope than the mini-split itself does. Half the homes in Berrien County, Michigan were built in 1966 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). A house built around that era was wired for what was standard then, and the service capacity already in the walls decides whether a new unit connects cleanly or whether an electrician has to open the panel first. The ductwork question does not apply to a mini-split, so what a contractor actually has to price is the electrical side before anything else goes on order.

What a Mini-split Installation Puts in Your Home

Isometric line illustration of a cutaway house with a shingled gable roof, showing two wall-mounted indoor air conditioning units connected by piping to an outdoor condenser unit on the ground outside.

The indoor air handler mounts high on an interior wall inside the room being conditioned, and it is the piece a homeowner sees every day. The outdoor unit sits on the ground or a bracket outside the house and holds the compressor. Together these two units do the work of moving heat in or out of the space.

A refrigerant line set runs through a small hole in the wall to connect the indoor and outdoor units, carrying the refrigerant between them. A condensate drain line also runs from the indoor unit to channel moisture away. The outdoor unit needs a concrete pad or mounting bracket to sit level and stable.

The drawing shows the general layout of a mini-split system, and a licensed contractor will determine exactly how each piece applies to your home.
